Origin, Process, and Tasting Notes

Description

Bag Size: 250 g

Origin: Kirinyaga, Kenya

Producer: Kagumo Factory

Altitude: 1,850 masl

Variety: SL28 & SL36

Process: Washed

Tasting Notes: Blackcurrant, Grapes, Citrus

Roast Date: 22 September 2026

Roasted for: Omni

Juicy, punchy and unmistakably Kenyan. Kagumo hits you immediately with an intense blackcurrant character, followed by ripe grape sweetness and a bright citrus acidity that keeps the cup incredibly lively. Thereโ€™s a beautiful tension between sweet and tart here - vibrant, refreshing and full of fruit, with the clarity and energy we love in great washed Kenyan coffees.

Roasterโ€™s Description

This lot was selected during a visit to Kagumo Factory in February for its exceptional freshness and punchy fruit character. Coffees composed exclusively of Kenyaโ€™s celebrated SL varieties are becoming increasingly difficult to find as newer, higher-yielding varieties become more common.ย This lot brings together SL28 and SL36, showcasing the classic profile that made Kenyan coffee famous.

Located in Kirinyaga, Kagumo Factory processes coffee grown in deep red volcanic soils rich in phosphorus and naturally well drained. Interestingly, the site began life as a sisal factory in the mid-1950s before eventually becoming a coffee processing facility.

Today, the Aguthi Farmers Cooperative Society at Kagumo represents 501 farmer members, including 175 women. Across approximately 186 acres, coffee is harvested from more than 100,000 trees. The areaโ€™s rich soils, temperatures ranging from around 15โ€“27ยฐC and annual rainfall of approximately 1,090 mm create excellent conditions for producing sweet, mature cherries.

Kagumo has a long history of quality, receiving recognition for both grading and harvest production in the late 1990s. This washed SL28 and SL36 lot continues that tradition with a vibrant profile of blackcurrant, grape and citrus.

Whole Bean Only

Brew It Right

All coffees are sold exclusively as whole beans.

Grinding just before brewing preserves aromatics, structure, and clarity in the cup. For that reason, JONNY does not offer pre-ground coffee.

If you donโ€™t yet own a grinder, consider this your sign. A proper grinder will elevate your coffee more than almost any other tool. (Youโ€™ll find a curated selection of hand grinders here.)

In the meantime, make friends with your local barista and ask them to grind the beans for your preferred brew method. Theyโ€™ll understand.

Roast Date & Freshness

Freshness, With Intention

Every coffee lists its roast date. I am committed to offering beans at their optimal drinking window. Freshly roasted coffee needs time to rest:

โ€ข Filter coffee is typically best starting 7 days after roast.

โ€ข Espresso benefits from 10โ€“14 days of rest for balance and stability.

Coffee remains vibrant for several months when stored properly, but for peak clarity and sweetness, I recommend enjoying it within 4 months of the roast date. To maintain high standards:

โ€ข Coffees that reach 6 weeks from roast are offered at a reduced price.

โ€ข Coffees that reach 12 weeks from roast are removed from inventory.

This ensures that what arrives at your door reflects the level of quality I stand behind.

All coffee sales are final. Due to the perishable nature of roasted coffee, returns and refunds are not accepted.
